Stuart Pierce: Ready to Steer England Through on Euro 2012
Apr 25
Though he says managing England is indeed a very tough job, he is ready to take on the responsibility for a short time period. Yes, I am talking about Stuart Pierce, who happens to be Great Britain’s Olympic coach and under 21’s manager at present. He feels he has the experience and skills to fulfill the responsibility as the manager of England football team for Euro 2012 and has conveyed his readiness to FA bosses. With Fabio Copello stepping down, someone has to fill the breach, and Pierce feels he has the credentials to take on the responsibility for a short time period.
Pierce himself candidly admitted that he does not have the skills and experience necessary to take on the job on a permanent basis. He says he cannot pretend to have answers to all the ills present in English football. Pierce added that he retired at 40 as a player and is still learning managing teams. Pierce takes pride in taking the under 21 team to the final against Germany in 2009 in European championship. He was praised lavishly the day before but got the flak for 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Germany.
About the chances of winning the cup, Pierce happens to be rather pessimistic saying the last major cup won was World Cup way back in 1966, and though expectations run high every time team goes to take part in a major championship, the cabinet containing the trophies doesn’t lie. However, he said that he does not want to play down the chance of English players puling out an upset this time.
