When Robin van Persie was stretchered off ten minutes into The Netherlands’ friendly against Italy on Sunday I, like many other Gooners, feared the worst. Just as Arsenal’s talismanic striker was hitting his straps and finally building towards a truly injury-free season, he was scythed down by defender Giorgio Chiellini and left in a crumpled heap.

Last week Arsene Wenger celebrated becoming the longest serving manager in Arsenal’s history. Of all the successes that the Frenchman has had at the club, one of the most enjoyable for both Arsenal fans and football fans in general, has been the implementation of a fluid, attacking style of play.

A couple of months ago I would have never thought we’d sell Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure while signing just one player, a centre back, in the entire transfer window. With a day and a half left in the transfer period those are the only alterations to Arsenal’s squad, and at this stage it looks like it will remain that way.

Arsenal ended their otherwise promising pre-season campaign with a disappointing 2-0 loss away to Valencia last yesterday. Lukasz Fabianski saved a  penalty from the dangerous David Villa in a rain-soaked first half, before Michel put the hosts in front with fifteen minutes to go. Villa made amends for his penalty miss when he made it 2-0 at the death, inflicting Arsenal’s only pre-season defeat.
