Liverpool 1 (Kuyt 41) – Arsenal 2 (Johnson OG. 50, Arshavin 58)
Match Report | Highlights
Manuel Almunia – To say Almunia was a bit shakey tonight is an understatement. Gifted Liverpool their opener when he punched the ball directly into the path of Dirk Kuyt and was hesitant throughout the match, looking like he had no faith in his defence despite their solid performance. Distribution was also sub-par. Good low save from Torres, though. 4
Bacary Sagna – Solid throughout the match. Made some great interceptions on the right flank and while he could have done a bit more in attack, he performed his primary task of defending with aplomb. It was no coincidence that Yossi Benayoun (arguably Liverpool’s best player this season) did nothing all evening. 7
William Gallas – Solid throughout and comfortable dealt with Fernando Torres for the majority of the encounter. He was an authorative figure at the back, and although he had a couple of sloppy ill-timed tackles, his performance was commendable. 7
Thomas Vermaelen – Absolute beast in defence. Monstered Liverpool for the entire fixture, and was relentless in the tackle. Torres and Gerrard did absoluely nothing all night, and that was mostly due to Vermaelen’s herculean performance at the back. He was awesome in the air also, winning nearly every header he contested and providing a danger from set pieces. Man of the match for me. 8.5
Armand Traore – Was a bit suspect defensively early on, but grew in stature as the game progressed. Dirk Kuyt did get the better of him on a couple of occasions, however he was not helped by the fact that Samir Nasri offered him no protection on the left. Needs to work on his defensive positioning, however he dealt with most of what the Scousers could muster. 6.5
Denilson - Failed to make a significant impact on the match despite being on the pitch from the outset. Didn’t really put himself about and was largely anonymous throughout. When he did receive the ball he did little wrong – his passing was precise and his movement was good – however he was a bit lax in his efforts. 6
Alex Song – Workmanlike once again in the core of the Arsenal midfield. Song’s dogged nature has won him many plaudits in the last year (myself included) and performances like yesterday’s make me think he is truly one of the most underrated players on the planet. He was always around to win the ball and kept Gerrard in his pocket all night. 8
Cesc Fabregas – Failed to control the tempo of the match as he would have liked, however his class was evident throughout. He was quiet in the opening stages but emerged in statures as the game went on, and showed his amazing passing range in the second half. Unfortunately not much came off for the Arsenal skipper, however is workrate is admirable. 7
Theo Walcott – Didn’t receive a lot of service however his pace was electrifying when he got a chance to show it off. He was a threat when on the ball, however he often failed to get into good positions. Liverpool defenders did get the best of him physically though and he demonstrated a lack of composure with some awful final balls, however he did have a hand in both goals. 7
Andrey Arshavin -Put in a quality performance up front despite his small size. The crafty Russian schemer made an abundance of clever runs and opened up space not only for himself but for his teammates. Deservedly got on the scoresheet with a stunning goal, and was truly one of the best players on the field. 8
Samir Nasri – Offered the inexperienced Armand Traore no protection on the left flank, failing to track back often. He was lazy and did not show for the ball as much as he could have. Arsene must have gotten up him at half time as his performance was far more energetic in the second period, and Nasri showed the craft and guile that we all know he is capable of. 6.5
SUBSTITUTES
Abou Diaby, Mikael Silvestre, Aaron Ramsey – All 6.5.

Walcott dun deserve 7. Not at all
Traore should be 7. The lad picked up in the 2nd half and locked out Gerrald, Torres, Kuyt etc. The lad is too fast and very intelligent.
Vermaelen is really a monster in defence despite not being very tall. I love this guy. We just need another very good defender to partner him in defence and we will be fine, especially now that Gallas is getting older and not gonna stay with us forever. My bet would be that wenger goes cheap and chooses DJ as Gallas future deputy.
However, I would prefer Song and Vermaelen as the future Central Defence. Denilson and another incoming experience DM (cross fingers and hoped for Mbia) to partner Cesc in midfield.
Vermaelen is good, damn good!!!!
Den gets a 6 and walcott gets a 7 – how the hell did you figure that out? Typical blinkered, bias bullsh*t from you mate – go back and watch the 1st half again, it was Liverpool versus Den, he was epic…Walcott did what? Lost the ball, didn’t defend…you have no idea mate, your player ratings are gash.
I agree with Andy B. Did you really watch the game ?Walcot understandably is his early days presence in the premiership but dont tell us his performance was good yesterday. What he has done ?Nothing .he falls like a fly and he dont have passion no anger .This is an englishman after all .Four if i am generous.
Denilson did fuck all. He was hardly “epic” in the first half as Liverpool definitely got the better of us in the first period, especially in the midfield.
Bias, blinkered? You’re taliking out of your arse. To say its “typical” of me is a joke as I’ve championed Denilson many times on this blog in the past (much more than I have Walcott, I might add) but he did absolutely nothing of note yesterday, and he hardly put any effort in. He did as little as he could to get by.
Walcott’s final ball was a bit off (as I said) and he demonstrated a lack of composure, however the desire and energy was there, and he did have a hand in both goals. Perhaps you also failed to notice Walcott’s movement off the ball. The runs he makes draw defenders out and open up an abundance of space for the likes of Cesc and Arshavin to move into. He was an instant threat as soon as he moved to the left wing in the second half, also.
Denilson failed to provide any sort of threat at all. Yeah he didn’t make as many mistakes as Walcott but he didn’t try to pull off anything more difficult than a 30 yard pass.
I’d suggest you go back and read a bit more of this blog before you call me bias and blinkered again.
according to my opinion,DENILSON and SONG should not be played to gether.so,even for the future arsene should select one from the two.so,definitely it as to be SONG.Because DENILSON has no force or energy.he runs simply to fail down.
I think Walcott’s problem is the stop-start nature of his career. he seems to either be injured or restructed to making cameos off the bench. That said, he needs to find greater consistency with his first touch, control and final ball if he ever to ever truly fulfil his potential. As for Denilson, I think his lack of physical prowess is his Achilles heel. Many times yesterday his limited strength was apparent in the way he was easily hounded off the ball. It’s true that his accurate passing does much to help the team retain possession but I’d much rather lose him than Alex Song for a month in the New Year. Some of the other ratings are a tad over-generous in my opinion. Take Sagna, for instance. He was typically energetic going forward but I thought his defensive played was suspect at times. On more than one occasion in the second period, Torres went round him easily to get into very threatening positions. And much as I admire Arshavin, would you really have given him an eight without his latest wonder strike?
Sorry, I submitted this initially without proof-reading it first. Hopefully, it will now make more grammatical sense!

Graham: This is exactly how players get 8. They just score wonder goals when it is sooo much needed.
